Getting to Dingle?
“Hi Stephen, we are excited to be soon coming to Dingle. Which is the closest airport?”
We receive this email on a weekly basis from friends and future friends.
Well the closest airport is not always the best option, but sometimes it is, read on and then make your decision.
- Kerry Airport is the closest airport. It is about 50 minutes drive away from Dingle, en-route you’ll pass some of the most glorious scenery on earth. It is also 10 minutes from Killarney. You can fly here from destinations such as London Stansted and Frankfurt Hahn. Ryanair are the main airline servicing Kerry, but Aer Lingus also fly from Dublin to Kerry – which is a very quick 45 minute flight.
- You can also fly to Shannon or Cork airports, both are about 2 hours away. Then take a bus or train to Tralee and take the bus or taxi from there to Dingle. There are transatlantic flights to Shannon and soon (2017) there will be direct flights from Cork to the US also.
- STEPHEN’S PERSONAL PREFERENCE – this is just my preference, it does add extra time, but I find its nearly easier flying to Dublin and taking a train or bus from there to Dingle via Tralee. I enjoy taking a taxi to Dublin city centre (Heuston Train station) and taking the train to Tralee (on this train I upgrade for €25 extra to the blissful first-class section and there I get good coffee complimentary, can have a hot snack and get good wi-fi to get a few hours of work, email or writing done) pre-arrange our favourite local taxi-driver to collect us in Tralee…. To rent a car and drive from Dublin airport direct to Dingle is about 4.5 hours, a bus will take a little longer considering there will be the requirement to change buses in Tralee. If you take the train to Tralee you likely will have to take the main Cork-Dublin train and then hop off in Mallow (County Cork) and take the train to Tralee or Killarney. Or we can arrange a taxi pick-up for you (this taxi pick-up is very handy but a wee bit expensive at around €90 one way. But its relaxing, scenic, reliable and you’ll have a courteous and friendly local driver to chat with you and answer any questions)
